The 84% Illusion: Arkansas’ Undying Support vs. The MAGA Influencer Schism
Fox News recently celebrated a poll claiming that nearly 84% of Republicans and a staggering 94% of self-described "MAGA" Republicans support the conflict in Iran (1). While these numbers suggest a united movement, high-profile MAGA media stars have been loudly taking opposing sides in recent headlines.
Natural State lawmakers have formed a "Fortress of Support" for the administration, standing in near-total favor. Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has framed the mission as spiritual, stating:
"I believe God put them there for such a time as this, and am inspired by their faith and courage. May God bless our President, our amazing military and all those willing to risk their lives in the fight for good against evil." (2)
This sentiment is echoed by her father, Mike Huckabee, the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, who described the strikes as a necessary and historic turning point for global security:
"This is an incredible moment for the people of Iran and for the world. It is a moment where we finally say that America's friends can trust us, but America's foes had better fear us. We are seeing the defanging of a regime that has exported terror for decades, and we stand resolute in ensuring they never achieve their nuclear ambitions." (3)
The state's congressional delegation—Senators Tom Cotton and John Boozman, along with Representative French Hill—reinforce this front. Senator Cotton has claimed to hear "unqualified support" (4) from constituents, while Representative Hill characterized the operation as a "step toward lasting peace." (5)
Long-time (former) Fox News analyst and a founding father of the MAGA movement, Tucker Carlson, has been a prime leader of the opposite. Spearheading the isolationist stance of what could easily be considered a "MAGA Civil War," he has previously detailed American strikes on Iran as "disgusting and evil." (6) He has gained a spotlight for recent quotes such as:
"This war is not only contrary to America First; it is its inverse. It is a rejection of the very principles this movement was built on. While you struggle to pay for a tank of gas in your own town, the people in Washington are obsessed with 'regime change' in a country most of them couldn't find on a map." (7)
He also added: "Our government's job is not to look out for Iran or Israel—it's to look out for us."
Tucker's seemingly America First stance has gained outrage from other conservatives including Fox News host Sean Hannity, Texas senator and former presidential candidate Ted Cruz, Mark Levin, and even President Trump himself. Hannity responded: "To suggest that our mission in Iran is 'evil' or 'disgusting'—when we are stopping a nuclear holocaust—is just reckless. It’s not the MAGA I know." (8) Ted Cruz damned Tucker stating: "I believe Tucker Carlson is the single most dangerous demagogue in this country." (9) Long-time radio host Mark Levin validated Cruz's "demagogue" metaphor saying: "Senator Cruz is exactly right. We are seeing a dangerous demagoguery taking root in our own ranks. You have people like Tucker Carlson—a maggot who sits in a safe studio while lobbying for the interests of the Mullahs in Iran. This isn't 'America First'; it is a betrayal of our allies and a surrender to evil." (10)
President Donald Trump has even gone as far as banishing Tucker from claiming the "MAGA" ideology: "Tucker has lost his way. I knew that a long time ago, and he’s not MAGA. MAGA is saving our country. MAGA is making our country great again. MAGA is America First, and Tucker is none of those things. And Tucker is really not smart enough to understand that." (11) Just in case you thought the President may have changed his mind, he also posted: "Somebody please explain to kooky Tucker Carlson that IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON! He wants us to do nothing while they build bombs to use on us and our friends. Not smart! Not MAGA!" (12)
Tucker Carlson, however, may not be alone in his sentiments that American involvement is "disgusting." Despite what Fox News may want you to believe, not every conservative who is "America First" supports this foreign conflict. Especially in conservative influencer media, the numbers seem way more divided than 84%.
Influencer | Stance | Verified Word-for-Word Quote |
Theo Von | Opposed | "It feels satanic, man." (13) |
Hodge Twins | Opposed | "Freeing the people of Iran is not why I voted for Trump." (14) |
Joe Rogan | Opposed | "Many of President Trump's voters feel betrayed... after years of condemning 'endless' wars." (15) |
Doc Washburn | Opposed | "We wanted a border, not a Middle East blockade." (16) |
Candace Owens | Opposed | "The American heartland is being bled dry for another regime-change experiment." (17) |
Thomas Massie | Opposed | "I am opposed to this war. Bombing a country on the other side of the globe is not America First." (18) |
Ben Shapiro | Supportive | "This strike is a moral necessity; we are pulling the weed of the Iranian regime by its roots." (19) |
Jake Paul | Supportive | "You are liberating the women of Iran. This is about freedom and standing up to bullies." (20) |
Sarah Palin | Supportive | "We cannot second guess the measures that Israel and our President have to take." (21) |
Ron DeSantis | Supportive | "We must ensure peace through strength is the standard... Florida stands with the President." (22) |
Notice how those in support tend to be establishment politicians and mainstream commentators, while the independent influencers are increasingly taking the lead on the opposition.
